Language shifts in the language biographies of immigrants from Upper Silesia residing in Germany

Abstract The main objective of the article is to illustrate how language ideologies and language management at the macro-level (state language policy), micro-level (in families) and meso-level (local communities) influence language change and the conceptualization of multilingualism of immigrants from Upper Silesia residing in Germany. Language biographies of persons from Silesia demonstrate the significant influence of historical and political events on sociolinguistic processes. Original fragments of biographical interviews of the people surveyed constitute an integral part of the text.

Viimeistään 1900-luvulta lähtien on ajateltu, että yhteinen sukunimi symboloi suomalaista perhettä julkisissa yhteyksissä ja muodostaa perheenjäsenten yhteisen identiteetin perustekijän. Suomen lainsäädännön mukaan naiset olivat kuitenkin velvollisia ottamaan aviomiehensä sukunimen vain lyhyen aikaa, 1930-luvulta 1980-luvulle ulottuvalla ajanjaksolla. This paper focuses on the path dependency of landscapes in Latgale, Latvia from the present perspective at the regional and local scale. During the last centuries Latvia's landscapes have passed through radical changes, which were driven by political events. Each new political era discarded the ideas of the previous era and subsequently reorganized the land(scape) according to the new views. At the regional level the role of history is significant in analyzing landscapes while at the local level the main force is people, often themselves not knowing the history of the place but putting the existing path dependency into practise or disregarding it. He Is All American Now”: Italian–Americans in the Italian Campaign of World War II

This chapter aims to analyze the case of the Italian–Americans' participation in World War II. It is an interesting case study to focus on issues connected to the processes of constructing multifaceted identities that characterize ethnicity. In 1943, in view of the invasion of Italy, the US asked Italian–Americans to fight against their ancestor country. Nonetheless, they were encouraged to exploit their idealistic roots and their “ethnical” competence to facilitate a “good occupation.” Biographies of Italian–Americans that were in Italy will help us to examine the interplay between Italianness and Americanization in war experience.

Changing vocational special needs education : From teacher to developer

Biographies can be used to examine changes in teaching and analyse how teachers experience education policies. This study focused on 11 vocational special needs education teachers (vocational SNE teachers) who wrote work-related memoirs. Six of them were also interviewed. Qualitative content analysis was used to determine how experienced SNE teachers describe the changes and challenges in vocational education and training since the 1970s. The findings suggested that the work of vocational SNE teachers has changed from segregated student-focused remedial instruction to planning and administrative work with indirect impact.
